Leatherjacket Fish (Maqwa) in the Southern Waters of Iran

The leatherjacket fish (locally called Gish or Maqwa) is caught in the southern waters of the country. Its body is spindle-shaped and silver in color. In younger fish, the first dorsal fin has very short spiny rays, which disappear in adults. The dorsal and anal fin rays are very long, equal in length to the body. This species is carnivorous and predatory.

The flesh of most leatherjacket species has thin skin, making the meat very white and delicious. However, in some species, the skin is thicker and the flesh is slightly darker in color.
