Description
Spangled Emperor (Lethrinus nebulosus) is one of the important species of the family Lethrinidae (emperors) in the order Perciformes. This fish is distributed in the tropical waters of the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific Ocean, especially in coral reef and coastal areas of northern Australia, the Persian Gulf, the Sea of Oman, and the coasts of Southeast Asia.
In terms of appearance, this species has an oval, laterally compressed body with a grayish-blue coloration marked by golden or light blue spots. Its average size is about 40–۶۰ cm, but under favorable conditions, it can grow beyond ۸۰ cm. It has a continuous, relatively long dorsal fin and a large mouth, which enables it to prey on a variety of bottom-dwelling organisms such as shellfish, crabs, mollusks, and occasionally small fish. Locally, in southern Iran and Gulf countries, this fish is known as Shuaari (Shoori/Sha’ri).
Nutritional Benefits of Spangled Emperor
The meat of this fish is a rich source of high-quality protein, containing all essential amino acids required by the body. It supports muscle growth, tissue repair, and immune system health. Although it is generally low in total fat, it provides beneficial fats such as omega-3 fatty acids, making it an excellent choice for low-fat diets. Omega-3s help reduce inflammation, improve brain function, strengthen the heart, and lower the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
