Description

Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) is one of the most important farmed species in Iran’s aquaculture industry. Native to North America, this species was introduced to Iran in the 1950s (1330s in the Iranian calendar). Thanks to its fast growth, high meat quality, relative resistance to diseases, and adaptability to different environmental conditions, rainbow trout quickly gained popularity among Iranian fish farmers.

Today, Iran is one of the largest producers of rainbow trout in the Middle East, with over 120,000 tons produced annually in fish farms across the country. The main farming centers are located in Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari, Mazandaran, Lorestan, and Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad provinces, where abundant cold and running water provides ideal conditions for trout farming.

Farming is usually carried out using semi-intensive or intensive methods in concrete ponds or irrigation channels. Trout are fed with commercial diets rich in protein, fat, and vitamins. Effective management of water quality, temperature, dissolved oxygen, and environmental hygiene are key factors for success in this industry.

Nutritional Benefits of Rainbow Trout

Rainbow trout meat is rich in high-quality protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins such as D and B12. These nutrients support heart health, reduce inflammation, and improve brain function. Regular consumption of trout can also help prevent chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes.
